Honoring Sacrifice and Unity: Reflections from Pearl Harbor Day Parade in Hawaii

Updated: Dec 9, 2025

While on vacation in Hawaii on December 7, 2025, First Lady Carolyn and I had the privilege to participate in the Pearl Harbor Day parade and activities. This day of remembrance holds deep meaning for all Americans. It honors the brave soldiers who sacrificed so much for our country and reminds us of the strength found in unity.

Remembering the Sacrifice of Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor Day marks a pivotal moment in American history. On December 7, 1941, the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor thrust the United States into World War II. The parade and ceremonies in Hawaii bring together veterans, families, and citizens to pay tribute to those who lost their lives and those who fought to protect our nation.

Walking alongside the parade, I felt a profound respect for the courage displayed by these soldiers. Their sacrifice was not just for a moment in time but for the future of our country. It reminded me how important it is to honor their memory by fostering unity among all Americans.

Reflecting on American History and Doris (Dorie) Miller made history as the First Black American to receive the Navy Cross, the Navy's second highest honor, for his extraordinary heroism.

Despite being denied combat training because of his race Miller courageously carried injured crew members to safety, including his mortally wounded captain, and skillfully operated a .50 caliber machine gun for 15 minutes.

Miller's remarkable bravery earned him a promotion to Petty Officer 3rd class.

Remembrance Day also made me think about the many conflicts throughout American history where people from diverse backgrounds came together to defend our union. One powerful example is the story of Crispus Attucks, the first person killed in the escalating conflict that led to the Revolutionary War. Attucks was an African-Indigenous sailor who died on March 5, 1770, during the Boston Massacre.

His sacrifice symbolizes the unity of Americans regardless of race, nationality, or religion. Throughout history, Americans have stood side by side to protect the ideals of freedom and democracy. This unity is the foundation of our strength as a nation.

The Importance of Unity in Today’s Political Climate

As we approach the upcoming midterm elections, it is crucial to remember the lessons of history. We must elect leaders who prioritize unity and represent all people, regardless of race, party, or denomination. Divisiveness weakens our country, but leaders who bring people together build a stronger future.

In Mississippi County, Arkansas, District 34, I support Mike Middlebrook for this reason. Mike stands for Unity For Success. He believes in being a voice for all people and working across differences to achieve common goals. Electing leaders like Mike Middlebrook ensures that our communities remain inclusive and focused on progress.

How We Can All Promote Unity

Unity is not just the responsibility of politicians. Each of us can contribute by:

  • Respecting diverse perspectives and listening to others with an open mind

  • Engaging in community activities that bring people together

  • Supporting leaders who promote inclusion and fairness

  • Educating ourselves about the sacrifices made by those before us

By embracing these actions, we honor the legacy of those who fought for our country and build a future where everyone belongs.

Moving Forward with Unity and Respect

The experience at the Pearl Harbor Day parade was a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made for our freedom and the importance of unity in preserving it. As Americans, we share a responsibility to uphold these values every day.

This year, as you consider your vote in the midterms, think about the leaders who will bring people together rather than divide. Support candidates like Mike Middlebrook who stand for unity and represent all voices in Mississippi County, Arkansas.

Together, we can honor the past and build a future where every American feels included and valued. Unity is not just a slogan; it is the path to success for our communities and our country.
